A week into it....

The first week of this journey is behind me and all in all it went pretty well.  The pain of the braces got better after about the sixth day, and now I hardly even notice them :)  So much to the point that I want to get back to the OD and get them tightened!  Because if they stopped hurting that means the teeth stopped moving, right?  Hahaha, I know that's not quite how it works, but I can be impatient sometimes!

Going into work (and back into the general public, for that matter) wasn't that bad.  I've been told they look cute on me, but I know I look about 16 now (but only because people know I can drive!  Because I really look about 12).  I'm a little surprised I haven't gotten ID'd more. I went out the last two weekends and only got ID'd once!  Maybe it's not as bad as I think?  Luckily it's becoming more common for adults to have braces, so it's not so bad going out (not that I go out alot, because usually I don't).  I found out last night that a friend is getting braces on in April for the purpose of jaw surgery in October, which is (hopefully!) about the same time I'll be having my surgery.  It's crazy to me how common this jaw surgery is!

That's about it for now, time to enjoy a little dessert:)

  1. Amy! I just saw that you're from Essex. I live in Windsor! That's crazy!!! Who is your surgeon and orthodontist?

  2. Are you really?? What a small world! My ortho is Dr. Voth and my surgeon is Dr. Stapleford. Who do you see?

  3. WOWOWOW! This is insanely coincidental! My ortho is Dr. Lalani (he's in the same office as Voth) and my surgeon is Stapleford too! This is too exciting for me!

  4. Wow! Lol, that's crazy! I think Dr. Lalani looked at me the other day (I had to go back to get a bracket fixed). How do you like Dr. Stapleford so far? I've only met him once. When's your surgery?

  5. I'm pretty sure Voth and Lalani collaborate because Voth looked at my mouth the other day too.
My surgery isn't until June 4th. I've seen Stapleford 5 times now, including when I had my wisdom teeth and premolars extracted. I find that he's really personable, and I think he does a really good job. I've been asking everyone what they've heard about him and I only hear good things. My only concern is that he's so focused on functionality that cosmetics is somewhat overlooked. But each time I see him, I feel more confident about how he'll move my face around. Also, right now he's mentoring a resident surgeon who has learned newer techniques that Stapleford wasn't aware of before, so that's good. I don't know how long the resident will be there for, but I'm hoping he'll be there during my surgery, since the more surgeons, the better!
Overall, I feel really good about Stapleford. I think he does most of the jaw surgeries in the Windsor area.
I'm so glad you decided to blog! Please update if you find anything out about Stapleford. You'll have the pleasure of seeing my surgery first, so I'll be sure to give you the scoop on him;)

  6. I just went back and re-read what you've written so far, and it's crazy to know you're talking about my OS and essentially my OD as well! That's too bad about your surgery date being pushed back:( I really have no clue when mine will be at this point, I'm hopeful that it will be in about a year, but after reading different blogs I've realized anything can happen and until I have an official date set in stone I won't know for sure.

  7. Dr. Stapleford was really nice when I met him and he had the resident surgeon with him. Even though we didn't get into what he was actually going to be doing with me he made my step-dad feel much better about the whole thing (he was very much against this whole thing at first). I can't wait to hear how it all goes for you! I'll be sure to keep you updated on how it goes with him. I know someone who had him for a surgeon a few years ago (she had jaw surgery too), she had a hard time with it overall, but was in her 30s when she had the surgery. But even though she had a hard time with recovery she said he was a good OS!

  8. I re-read your blog too, and it is really weird to be able to picture all of your scenarios! It sounds like we have similar problems too (we even had braces a decade ago in the same office!).
It took a while for a lot of my family and friends to understand this surgery too, especially because it's mainly proactive, but they come around.
Well good luck with everything! Not to be a downer, but it's a long journey! Hopefully, your teeth will be ready for surgery in a year from now!

  9. Hey Amy! Thanks for posting on my blog. I look forward to following your jaw surgery journey as well.... A year will fly by before you know it! I've been in braces for 1 year and a few weeks now and it seems like it's only been a few months!
